Ancient Diseases of Human Ancestors
Ive written before about ancient diseases of the ice age, but this time Im going even further back in time, to diseases that were present in the first human-like hominids. Although many human infections only developed after human settlements and animal domistication, early human ancestors would still have been fighting off bacteria and other nasty diseases. Genetics may explain blond Solomon Islanders
By Meghan Holohan Courtesy of Sean Myles When then-post-doctoral student Sean Myles visited the Solomon Islands, he took this photo after noticing a large number of indigenous children with naturally blond hair. A few years later this photo sparked a study that identified the genetic cause of the striking hair and skin color combination. When Sean Myles worked as post-doctoral student in Carlos Bustamantes lab, he showed Bustamante a photo of a Melanesian child with cocoa-colored skin and bright blond hair, wearing a U.S. Continue reading

Pygmies: “old” populations, and a new “look” (?) | Gene Expression
Over the years one issue that crops up repeatedly in human evolutionary genetics and paleoanthropology (or more precisely, the popular exposition of the topics in the media) is the idea that is that population X are the most ancient Y. X will always refer to a population within a larger set, Y, which is defined by relative marginalization or retention of older cultural folkways. So, for example, I have seen it said that the Andaman Islanders are the most ancient Asian population. Continue reading

Hunt for genetic link to pygmy height yields clue
Even apparently straightforward traits can be controlled by complex genetics. A study on the roots of height in Pygmies ethnic groups in which adult men grow to no taller than 150 centimetres underscores how tricky it can be to find the genetic underpinnings of human characteristics. A group led by Sarah Tishkoff, a geneticist at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, examined the genomes and heights of 57 people from Pygmy groups in Cameroon and 39 of their taller neighbours, from local Bantu-speaking populations. Continue reading
