Everything you always wanted to know about IVF…if you're a man

By Michael Saunders Last updated at 10:00 PM on 3rd March 2012 I have accepted that I am never going to be any good at football, that I cannot drink more than a couple of pints of beer without falling asleep and that a Formula 1 team is unlikely to enquire whether I would care to take a quick spin in something they have been working on. I have come to terms with these things during my 37 years and I do not feel they make me less of a man. So you would think that after dealing with these shortcomings, I would have been well equipped to cope when I was told by a doctor that my sperm were, as he put it, rubbish. Continue reading

New IVF method increases chance of pregnancy by a quarter, experts say

A woman’s chances of becoming pregnant through in-vitro fertilization (IVF) can increase by more than a quarter with new technology that mimics the effects of the womb, experts claimed. Fertility experts at Newcastle University in northeast England discovered a way of processing embryos during IVF treatment that does not require the embryos to be removed from incubators for examination, which can be harmful. The team developed a system of interlinked incubators that allows all such procedures to be carried out within an enclosed and controlled environment, according to research published in the journal PLoS ONE Continue reading

Pioneered by a Newcastle team of fertility experts at the University and within the NHS, the innovative design of interlinked incubators provides a totally enclosed and controlled environment within which every step of the IVF process can be performed. Research published today in the journal PLoS ONE reveals that the introduction of the new system into the Newcastle Fertility Centre at Life, part of the Newcastle Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, resulted in a 27% increase in pregnancy rate compared with conventional equipment used in IVF treatment labs Continue reading

New test can better predict successful IVF embryos, scientists say

Public release date: 29-Feb-2012 [ | E-mail | Share ] Contact: Dominic Martella dominic.martella@ucd.ie 003-538-729-59118 University College Dublin Scientists at University College Dublin have discovered a new way of measuring the potential success rate of an embryo before it is transferred back into the womb during in vitro fertilisation (IVF). According to the findings published online in the journal Fertility and Sterility, the fluid within a woman’s ovaries that surrounds the egg or oocyte holds metabolic information that can improve predictions on which embryo is more likely to lead to pregnancy. “We analysed samples of the follicular fluid surrounding the immature ovum or egg before it was retrieved for IVF,” says Dr Lorraine Brennan, UCD Conway Institute, University College Dublin, Ireland.
