Why this could kill you
Next time you’re on a bus or train, holding on to a pole to avoid a fall, cranky that another commuter has nabbed the last seat, consider the fact that standing up could boost your longevity. Not only do we need to get more exercise but we also need to spend less of our time sitting down, Australian researchers say. Advertisement: Story continues below Their study of more than 220,000 NSW residents found the longer you spend sitting down the greater your risk of dying early, even if you otherwise do regular exercise Continue reading

Auburndale centenarian donates DNA to study
For Erna Rosenberg, it’s a mystery what’s led to her long life. Now a group of scientists are hoping that Rosenberg’s DNA, along with that of other centenerians, holds clues to solving that mystery. Rosenberg, who turned 100 in July, is one of about 100 with at least a century of life experience including the oldest person in the world 115-year-old Besse Cooper – who have donated samples of their DNA to scientists competing in the $10 million Archon Genomics X prize competition by Medco, a New Jersey-based health care and research company Continue reading

Large families the key to longevity
DUBBO women born before 1930 who bore a brood of children survived longer than their peers who never were mothers or had only one child. The director of the Dubbo Study of the Elderly, Leon Simons, revealed the gem of information at a conference in the city yesterday, ahead of its publication in medical journals. Mothers of six or more children had the lowest rating on an all-important measure, when data collected from 2805 Dubbo senior citizens in a 20-year study from 1988 was dredged recently Continue reading

Popping pills at 10 years old
17 March 2012 Last updated at 22:20 ET By Philippa Roxby Health reporter, BBC News Life expectancy has changed dramatically in a century. In 1908, half the UK population was dead by 60 and in 1948, when the contributory state pension was introduced, half the population was dead by the age of 72. Falling mortality rates, as a result of advances in science and medicine, mean the average UK man and woman can expect to live into their 80s, perhaps even to the age of 100, but what will the quality of our lives be like? Red Meat a Ticket to Early Grave, Harvard Says
Just in time to spoil the promise of warm-weather picnics, Harvard scientists have found that daily consumption of red meat particularly the kind you might like to grill may significantly increase your risk of premature death. While this much has long been suspected, perhaps even by you, the Harvard-led study is the first nuanced analysis to calculate the risk that a serving of red meat can have on your longevity compared with other protein sources. The study measures, for example, how much one could expect to lower their risk of early death by replacing pork and beef with poultry, fish, nuts or beans can lower the risk of early death; they found chicken was at least as healthy an alternative to red meat as beans and whole grains.
